Types of Food to Avoid if You Have Sensitive Teeth

Some people experience teeth sensitivity when they eat or drink something cold, sugary, sticky, or acidic. Most of the time, tooth sensitivity results from taking too much sugar or acid from food, resulting in the enamel wearing off. If you already have these problems, here are some troublesome foods that you should avoid. 


Soda is among the top foods to avoid if you have sensitive food. This is because it contains sugar, which is a food source of various harmful bacteria in the mouth. After drinking soda, bacteria inside your mouth produce lactic acid, which attacks the enamel, increasing the risk of cavities. Phosphoric acid, an ingredient in soda, also contributes to the erosion of your enamel. When your enamel is eroded, your teeth are not protected, which increases sensitivity and causes you discomfort and pain. 

Citrus Fruits

As much as they are a source of the needed vitamins, fruits like pineapples, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and lime produce citric acid. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, the acid found in these fruits contributes to the softening of the enamel, which increases tooth sensitivity. Apart from the fruits, even the juices of these fruits also contribute to the erosion of the enamel. Orange juice contains about 9.1- 16 grams of citric acid in every liter. Therefore, you may want to stay away from them. 

Ice Cream

While this may not be the food you want to find on this list, unfortunately, it also increases tooth sensitivity. Ice cream not only has sugar, but it is cold as well. This sensitivity can be a result of loose dental fillings, tooth decay, or an injury to your jaw. If, for any reason, your enamel has eroded, then taking ice cream becomes a painful experience. 

Hard Candy

Avoid hard candy when you have sensitive teeth. Things like lollipops, suckers, and peppermints have sugar which affects your teeth. Also, as advised by dental implants Georgetown, you might also break or chip your teeth if you keep taking hard candy. 


As much as they are delicious and with low calories, making them a loved snack, you may want to stay away from them if you have sensitive teeth. Additionally, the sugar inside the pickles can lead to cavities, causing you even more pain and discomfort. 


We all love that glass of wine accompanied by our meals. However, taking it in large quantities exposes the teeth to a significant amount of acid. That acidity enhances tooth sensitivity.
